Warabimochi & Kuzumochi Half & Half Set (¥1380)

As we are only 2 person doing reviews, so only have the stomach for that much food a day. Glad that they have the half & half set of Warabimochi and Kuzumochi, so we can taste both of them AND still try the Ujikintoki (shaved ice).

Although the amount of this dessert is rather small…

But I digress, into the review now.

The mochi itself is not the conventional ones we all know; nicely cut into cubes and topped with Kinako (example like the one at Kagizen Yoshifusa), but more on “purer” form if I can describe it that way, in round/teardrop shape, soft and more stretchy/elastic texture.

Warabimochi: Made using warabiko, water, and wasanbon sugar

Kuzumochi: Made using Morino Yoshino’s Kuzu, Ryuoen Chaho’s matcha, water, and wasanbon sugar

The set comes with 8 pieces of the mochi, and condiments to add on to the mochi if one wants to mix up the taste/flavour profile.

Warabimochi comes with the Kinako powder and Kuromitsu.

Kuzumochi comes with the matcha flavour Kinako powder and Anko.

When picked up the mochi using the chopsticks, one can feel it’s softness and elasticness, it looks delicate but yet it won’t break, while retaining the “melt in your mouth” feeling.

Taste wise it’s really pure as of the ingredients which should be the highlight, and the subtle wasanbon sweetness to it.

Overall: This is the first time we tried an authentic pure form of Warabimochi and Kuzumochi, it is definitely refine and elegant. It is great (as you can see the rating we given below), but I will say we prefer the more mainstream style of Warabimochi in cubes or big ball shape topped/mixed with Kinako already.

Ujikintoki (¥1380)

One of the most common dessert for summer, although it is autumn when we are there, but we still want to try so yeah, here it is!

First impression, it is HUGE! You can easily share it among 2 person with this amount.

Without further ado, we went straight away to pour over the matcha over the shaved ice.

When eating the shaved ice with the poured matcha, the first thing you taste is the matcha which is of great quality (Ryuoen Chaho’s matcha, the same used in making the Kuzumochi), and then the fine and soft texture shaved ice.

But due to mainly only 1 person (my wife) eating this, it got mixed with the melted ice, so it got diluted rather quickly, so as the taste/strength of the matcha. In short, try to eat a bit faster if you want to get more of the full matcha taste with the ice.

In the shaved ice, you can also find ingredients such as Anko (red bean paste), Shiratama (glutinous rice flour) which is also mixed with Hattai powder (roasted barley flour), and also condensed milk towards the bottom. Which add a different sweetness (Anko and condensed milk), and also a different texture (Shiratama) when eating together with the shaved ice.

Overall: It is a good dessert, but nothing really outstanding, probably a much better choice during summer or hotter days.
